Students from Clarksville Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) fight back against racism in Tennessee this semester to confront a white supremacist organization called American Renaissance (AmRen). American Renaissance white supremacists have been holding their national conference at Montgomery Bell State Park in Tennessee for the last several years. This conference draws the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis, anti-immigration thugs, racists, and fascists of all kinds to our area. They then discuss, network, and organize themselves towards their racist and genocidal agenda. In no uncertain terms, we recognize a fact proven by history. These white supremacists are a clear and present danger to our lives, our park, and our community. This can not and will not be tolerated.
Today, we see black and brown youth under attack by police and racist vigilantes. We see children murdered with impunity around the country. We see immigrants are under attack by a system of injustice that criminalizes immigrants and denies them full equality under the law. We see a world where basic human rights such as food, housing, education, and healthcare are denied to millions. Today, we must fight for justice and a better world for everyone. Amren and other nazis and fascists stand squarely against even the most basic demands of justice and equality. All thinking people must confront them at every turn and defeat them soundly.
SDS calls on all progressives and thinking people to stand against white supremacy. Join us in Montgomery Bell Park on April 26 at 4pm outside the Montgomery Bell Park Inn and Conference Center to confront these racists and send a clear message that they are not welcome here or anywhere. You can sign the petition demanding that the park not host the racists conference here:http://petitions.moveon.org/sign/montgomery-bell-park-2.
We are also asking people to call Governor Bill Haslam and Tennessee Department of Enivronment and Conservation (TDEC) Commissioner Robert Martineau every Friday from now through April to demand that they take action to cancel the conference.
Governor Bill Haslam: 615-741-2001
TDEC Commissioner Robert Martineau: 615-532-0106
Here is an example of what you could say:
"Hello my name is _____. I am concerned about the American Renaissance (AmRen) white supremacist conference that Montgomery Bell Park is planning to host from April 25th through the 27th. I see the decision to host this conference as an irresponsible promotion of racist ideology and if you do not cancel the conference I will no longer be able to patronize the Montgomery Bell Park Inn and will be advising my family and friends to do the same. American Renaissance is a hate group composed of nazis, the ku klux klan, and other fascists and its presence in the park is a clear and present danger to public health and safety. This is unacceptable and I urge you to take immediate action on this issue and cancel this conference."
