Statement of solidarity with Brown University students protesting Ray Kelly

Students for a Democratic Society congratulate the actions of student activists at Brown University for protesting New York City Police Commissioner, Raymond Kelly, when he attempted to give a lecture last month. SDS salutes them on taking a stand and denouncing the racist “stop-and-frisk” tactics NYPD has adopted under Kelly’s regime towards black and brown individuals. Students chanted and lectured Commissioner Kelly without allowing him to speak and successfully got the event cancelled. SDS is against the institutionalized racism employed by Commissioner Kelly and the NYPD and stands in solidarity with the student activists at Brown University for their actions.
