MC Rodstarz, MC/Producer G1, and Producer/DJ Illanoiz first performed at the massive immigrant rights march in New York City in 2006 in front of over half a million people. Since then, they have performed shows from Athens, Greece to Velera, Venezuela and shared the stage with legends of Hip-Hop including Afrika Bambaataa, DJ Kool Herc, Public Enemy, Mos Def and many others.
In 2008, the Rebel Diaz Arts Collective (RDACBX) community arts center was opened in the South Bronx with the mission to use Hip-Hop culture as a means of education and community empowerment. RDACBX has served over 10,000 people through its programs that include: dance classes, songwriting classes, music production classes, reading circles, political education workshops, and more.
In addition to performing at Austin Peay on Saturday night, Rebel Diaz will also be doing a workshop at the SDS convention called Hip-Hop and Immigration. The workshop will focus on the historic role of immigration, the criminalization of immigrants and youth of color, and Hip-Hop’s responsibility in defending immigrant rights.
