Welcome to the SDS National Convention!
Hey SDSers, The National Convention is only two weeks away! Here's an update from Milwaukee SDS concerning important information like places to stay, food, travel stipends, and other things. Lodging: We've got places for anyone and everyone to stay over the weekend here in Milwaukee. We try to be as hospitable as possible, but remember to bring pillows and sleeping bags! Most spaces will be mass housing, floorspace only. You'll often be bunking up with fellow SDSers at their places, so remember to be respectful of their space! We also have mass housing available at a great local coffeeshop called Brewing Grounds for Change, which opened their doors to us. Call Milwaukee SDSer Andrew Cox, at 608-642-2945 for information as to where you'll need to be! Food: We're working as hard as we can here in Milwaukee to provide free food to any and all that attend the Convention. If you have certain food allergies or preferences, such as vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free, don't worry, we are working to accommodate those things. If you haven't, please email email@example.com these preferences. Workshops: We're getting workshops in even in the last few days, and are always looking for SDS chapters to submit workshops to present at the National Convention! If you or your chapter have skills to share, please consider answering this short registration form to get your workshop on the list. It can be found here: www.surveymonkey.com/s/HWTN8RT Plenaries: We'll be having at least 2 panel-plenaries, one on Anti-war organizing and the other on organizing in the Education Rights movement. SDSers from around the country with a background on these subjects will be speaking on these panels, which will include small group discussions so that all can share their experiences. Keynote Speakers: We'll be hearing from several of the activists who were victims of FBI oppression, and were subpoenaed to appear before a Grand Jury in Chicago in the past weeks. Response from people around the country was strongly against the FBI Raids, with over 40 cities around the country standing together in vigils, demonstrations, and protests. Both Jess Sundin and Steff Yorek, members of the Anti-War Committee in Minneapolis, MN will discuss what has happened to them. Travel Stipends: For those of you needing Travel Stipends, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with your name, phone number, SDS chapter (if it exists), and the amount you're requesting. Money is still available! We will do our best to provide people with the funds they need to attend. Special consideration will be given to established SDS Chapters and youth interested in forming a chapter at their school or community. Be Ready to Share!: SDSers around the country organized amazing protests and demonstrations for Education Rights and against the Occupations in the Middle East and around the world! Be ready to share your experiences in organizing and lets continue to learn together to build a strong, independent, and radical student movement! If you can, bring tabling supplies and share your flyers and past work with us! Important Addresses and Dates: October 22nd: Try to arrive in Milwaukee by Friday night so we can have everybody in their lodging spaces and ready to go for Saturday Morning! October 23rd and 24th: Actual Convention time, located in the Wisconsin Room in the UW-Milwaukee Student Union, 2200 E Kenwood Blvd Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53211 (414) 229-4070.
