SDS Supports Lt. Watada

Northwest SDS outside Ft. Lewis
Ft. Lewis, Washington - February 5th, 2007 20-30 Northwest SDSers joined over 1000 people on the 5th of February outside Ft. Lewis in support of Lt. Ehren Watada. Watada was the first officer to refuse to deploy to Iraq, following in the footsteps of many other rank-and-file war resisters. The protest included speeches from actor Sean Penn, Iraq Veterans Against the War including Darrell Anderson and Chanan Díaz, many students including Bellingham SDS' Karim Ahmath, Gold Star Families including Augstin Aguayo's mother as well as a number of others. Hip hop artist Son of Nun was at the protest to energize the crowd.
That day the military judge declared a mistrial. The result will hopefully mean that Lt. Watada will walk free. His new court martial date has ironically been set for March 19, the anniversary of the Iraq War. Watada's bravery shows that like in vietnam, soldiers are increasingly willing to take a stand against the war. And like in Vietnam, the war will stop when the soldiers stop fighting it. That's why the army wants to make an example out of Watada. We need to do everything we can to support war resisters and help them fight back. SDS and the anti-war movement will not stand by while soldiers are intimidated and thrown in jail for following their consciousness.
